Betty Marries Daniel Broderick III
Betty Marries Daniel Broderick III
Betty
Broderick was born in 1947. She was the third of six children and grew
up in New York with a strict Catholic upbringing. Betty graduated from
College of Mount Saint Vincent, a Catholic college for girls. She met
Daniel Broderick in 1965 when he introduced himself as MDA standing for
Medical doctor almost. Dan seemed perfect in Betty's eyes. He was from a
large Catholic family and the two married in 1969 in an elaborate
Catholic ceremony. When they returned from their honeymoon Betty was
pregnant with their first child, Kim. She continued to have three more
children.
Betty was what one might call a supermom. She took care of her own kids and took in neighbors children to earn extra money. Dan was engrossed in his medical studies and had little time for family things and Betty took the sole responsibility of raising their children and taking odd jobs. Their life was far from glamorous and Betty was living like a single parent without any of the luxuries that her friends were enjoying. There were no weekends out or special moments with her husband, it was all work and responsibilities, but Betty was sure that all the extra hard work and sacrifice she was putting in would result in rewards in years to come.
Linda
Kolkena was born in 1961 and lived in a lower middle class household.
She never attended college but managed to squeeze by on her youthful
looks. She became an airline stewardess and enjoyed her job, but somehow
managed to get into so much trouble that she was fired. Apparently she
had become intoxicated while flirting with one of the passengers and
ended up sitting on his lap, much to the annoyance of the passengers on
the plane. After she was let go she applied to be a temporary
receptionist for an attorney in San Diego.
Dan
began an affair with Linda almost immediately after he hired her. She
had no previous experience in a law office and she couldn't type, yet
she was promoted to the position of legal assistant and given a large
office to herself. Linda was having the time of her life, she had hit
the jackpot in life and was not about to let Dan go. Dan was counting on
having a glorious and fun affair by showering his mistress with gifts,
but his mistress did not want a good thing to end.
Dan had given Linda a new car, a new wardrobe and an easy life, but he was not planning on leaving his wife for her. Linda wanted a family of her own and had no interest in dating any other man. No one could compete with the dashing and lavish Dan Broderick.
Dan wavered for the next seven years between distancing himself from Linda to telling Betty that he thought it best if they separate. Betty constantly harped on Dan and accused him of having an affair with Linda while Dan repeatedly denied having any kind of intimacy with Linda and told Betty that she was crazy and imagining things.
Eventually the pressure from his paramour became too much for him and Dan moved out of the Broderick home, leaving behind Betty and his four children. He quickly had Linda move in with him and admitted to Betty that she had been right all along, and he had been having an affair with Linda and was in love with her. Betty Broderick had gained more than 40 pounds and was obsessed with her husbands affair. She talked about it to anyone who would listen to her and was sorely disappointed to find that the women who had been her friends were now associating with Dan and Linda.
Dan filed for divorce and married Linda as soon as possible. Betty continued to lose stability and seven months after the marriage of Dan and Linda Betty took the key to Dan and Linda's home from one of her children and crept into their back door as they slept. When Betty reached the top of the stairs she headed straight for the couple's bedroom and opened fire. Both were shot to death while Betty pulled the telephone cord from the wall.
The trial of Betty Broderick was the most sensational that San Diego had ever seen. The defense sited Dan's verbal abuse and chronic lies to support a temporary insanity case, however, that single and unnecessary act of pulling the telephone cord from the wall would be Betty's undoing. The prosecution claimed that if Betty were truly in a state of temporary insanity she would have been confused, yet pulling the telephone cord from the wall supports a clear and calculated train of thought.
She is now serving a 32 years sentence in prison for second degree murder..
